”Catastrophic fires, the worst drought in history and record high temperatures are taking a tragic toll on native wildlife.

In WIRES history we have never seen a concurrent series of emergencies events like those that began in November. Hundreds of fires over weeks have burnt over 4.9 million hectares of land in NSW alone. Many animals were already struggling with a lack of water and food due to the drought. With the fires destroying unprecedented amounts of habitat, food shortages have increased and lack of suitable habitat will be a significant long-term challenge for surviving wildlife.

It is impossible to know how many animals have perished and it will be many months before the impact on wild populations can be better understood but ecologists at Sydney University have estimated over 800 million animals have been affected in Australia since September.

Summer is a frantically busy time for wildlife rescue and there are still over 100 fires burning in NSW. In December alone there were over 20,000 calls to WIRES 1300 line, a 14% increase on last year, and volunteers attended over 3,300 rescues.

To help rescue sick, injured and orphaned wildlife please support WIRES Emergency Fund.”

”Devastating Fires Ravage NSW

Horrific unrelenting fires continue to decimate NSW during one of the worst droughts in history. During the catastrophic fires, lives have been lost, hundreds of homes have been lost, over 4.9 million hectares of land has been destroyed and dozens of fires are still burning.

We need urgent assistance to help with these unprecedented emergencies. To help rescue wildlife please generously today.

It is impossible to estimate the number of native animals that have perished or how many more will be lost in the fires, or to predict the impact that dire food and water shortages, as well as habitat loss caused by the fires and drought, will have on wild populations.

In December alone WIRES 1300 line received over 20,000 calls and volunteers attended over 3,300 rescues.

Large areas of NSW and South East Queensland have been experiencing severe flying-fox starvation and dehydration events linked to the drought, this combined with heat stress emergency events over recent weeks, has already led to the loss of thousands of flying-foxes. With species such as Koalas and Grey-headed Flying-foxes already listed as vulnerable to extinction, the additional loss of life caused by emergencies like the fires and drought is even more devastating.

This koala, Kenny, was rescued from the Bilpin fires and came into WIRES care in the early hours of Sunday morning 22nd December.

Summer is always extremely busy for wildlife rescues, with WIRES regularly receiving 600-1000 calls a day from the community needing wildlife rescue advice and assistance for sick, injured and orphaned animals. This summer there is the additional stress of the emergency events and surviving animals will be struggling long-term with dire food and water shortages and loss of habitat.

Many of WIRES volunteer rescuers and carers are inundated with animals and these events stretch our already limited resources.

Please donate to help today. Your support will help ensure future generations will get to see wildlife in the wild. ”
